Summer in South Africa

When I joined the OTS Global Health summer course in South Africa, I had no idea what to expect. Every day was an adventure. Bundled up on early morning game drives trying to spot the elusive leopards that stalk Kruger National Park, and sleeping under the thousands of stars that dot the South African sky in Hamakuya were only a few of the memories that I will never forget.

All of our academics were very hands-on that allowed us to immerse ourselves in the projects. We had a homestay in a local village where we performed a research project, but also learned of another way of life. We visited a public hospital, a private hospital, and even a traditional healer to learn of the many ways that South Africans access and interact with medicine in the country.

This experience helped me cultivate my passion for global health. I met so many amazing people along the way, and I hope to return to South Africa in the near future to work on healthcare-related projects.

My advice to future travelers would be to set aside technology and live in the moment. Although you may not end up getting a majestic picture of a lion yawning in the early morning sun, life is better when not seen through a camera lens.
